Preserve your eyesight into old age
In the medicum Hamburg we offer the classical range of modern ophthalmology: diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the eye, the eye muscles, the tear ducts and eyelids. Ophthalmology enables everyone to preserve their eyesight into old age. In our specialised eye department in the medicum Hamburg we have many modern therapy methods at our disposal for treatment of even severe eye diseases which threaten to destroy vision. It is well worth going for a preventive eye check-up. The earlier a disease is detected, the better the chances of treating it effectively. The earlier a disease is diagnosed, the better are the chances of curing it.
The patient is at the centre of our inter-disciplinary medical care
Our aim is to provide the highest possible quality of medical care in a pleasant atmosphere with intensive personal attention to every patient – in spite of the modern technology which we use in diagnostics and treatment. We do not just examine the patient’s eyes, but include the whole body in the diagnostic process. Sometimes, changes in the eye are due to a disease of the body. And it happens quite often that the ophthalmologist is the first to diagnose diabetes mellitus or high blood pressure. Conversely, in the case of many diseases it is important to examine the eyes regularly in order to detect and treat any secondary damage at an early stage. In the medicum Hamburg you benefit from our closely co-ordinated medical care network. Through our co-operation with the physicians in our other specialist fields you can be sure that we include investigation of the causes of such conditions in the optimal holistic treatment of our patients.
The eyes can show signs which point to various diseases
The sudden occurrence of defective vision such as short-sightedness can be an important indication of various diseases, e.g. diabetes or high blood pressure. Short-sightedness usually occurs in children of school age. Therefore examination of the fundus of the eye is essential in such cases. Slight bleeding, congestion or rupture of the small blood vessels in the eye, for instance, are typical signs of high blood pressure. If any further special examinations are necessary, we co-operate with the Eye Clinic of the University Clinic Eppendorf, the Asklepiosklinik Barmbek and the Medical Eye Care Centre.
Important for diabetics
Examination by an eye specialist is especially important for diabetics. One of the secondary diseases associated with diabetes is diabetic retinopathy. The changes in metabolism cause damage to the blood vessels and a disturbance in blood supply in the retina. It is not possible to cure this disease, but the earlier treatment is commenced, the greater the chances of preserving the patient’s eyesight. This is why you should go to an eye specialist as soon as you have been diagnosed with diabetes. One especially dangerous and rapidly progressing eye disease is proliferative diabetic retinopathy which occurs predominantly in young Type-1 diabetics. In the western world this disease is one of the most frequent causes of blindness in the 20 to 65 year-olds. Two thirds of all diabetics suffer from disturbed blood circulation in the retina.
